Alfred Sewell Reavis, 89, passed away Sunday, January 24, 2016 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was born in Miami, Florida, the son of Gurney and Verdyne Reavis.
Al was raised in Washington, D.C. only a few blocks from the U.S. Capitol building, attending public schools there. Following his graduation from high school, he served in the U. S. Army during World War II, stationed in India. He returned to Washington where he primarily worked as an architectural draftsman. His son, Marc, was born in Washington in 1950.
Over the years, during regular visits to Carolina Beach where his grandfather owned properties, Al developed a love for the area and moved to Wilmington in 1973. He was employed by the Wilmington Housing Authority as Modernization Coordinator. While working at the Housing Authority, he met the love of his life, Barbara. They were married in 1979.
Al was an extraordinarily intelligent and capable man, with considerable interests. He was known as a man who could do anything well, including drafting and design, meticulous restoration of his and his wife’s home in the historic district, being an accomplished chef, jazz musician, model train buff, storyteller, lover of nature, and avid reader. His interests and curiosity in a wide variety of things continued unabated during his entire life.
He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by his dear family & friends, who will always remember Al’s wise countenance and his smooth, even manner.
