Naomi Ruth Whitley Martin, age 92, of Wilmington, passed away on Thursday, March 23,2017, at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice.

She was born on July 04, 1924, into a large farm family of eight children on an 81 acre farm near Archer Lodge in Johnston County, NC, the daughter of John and and Annie Carroll Whitley.

Ruth was married to Travis Martin, Sr. and raised two children Travis, Jr and Suzanne Bircher.

During her adult life she lived in many cities in NC, Raleigh, Marion, Charlotte, Huntersville, Beaufort and Morehead City and also in Hartsville, SC. Her retirement years, almost 25, of which were spent in Morehead City held special memories of Ruth and Travis. Her final years were spent in Wilmington at an assisted living home.

Ruth was loved by many. She gave tirelessly to her church members and did volunteer work in the community. Ruth became an LPN nurse in her 50’s and worked in nursing homes, she loved helping the elderly probably because she helped her mother nurse her bedridden father for seven years after he had a stroke. Her last church membership was in Morehead City at St. Peters United Methodist Church.

She loved her home in Brandywine Bay and worked in her yard all year long and she loved to walk in the neighborhood for exercise. She was loved by many.

Together with her parents she was predeceased by her husband.

She is survived by her children, five grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Memorial Service on Saturday, April 1,2017, 11:00 AM at Longview Baptist Church 2308 N New Hope Road, Raleigh NC 919.231.3747
