Memorial Gifts & Donations

Elaine Miele Matthews, formerly of Wethersfield and Torrington CT, died peacefully at her home in Wilmington, NC on June 21st. Elaine was a registered nurse at St. Francis Hospital for almost 30 years before she moved to NC and continued her work as an RN at Duke Raleigh Hospital. As a nurse, her work ethic was second to none and she was beloved by her peers and patients alike.

More importantly, Elaine was a loving and single mom to her 4 sons who loved their mother deeply. She was immensely proud of them and treasured their time together. They are grateful for all the times they shared and the strong sense of family that she fostered. In addition to her sons, her greatest joy and light of her life was her four grandchildren. The title “Grammy” was one she cherished more than any other. She also loved her two grand dogs and the beach time she spent with them.

Elaine is survived by her 4 children; Michael Matthews Jr and his wife Jaqueline Barkey of Raleigh, NC; Daniel Matthews and his wife Kimberly Matthews of Windsor, CT, along with their two children Gabriella and Andrew Matthews; Brendan Matthews and his wife Jennifer Matthews of Fuquay Varina, NC, along with their two children Sydney and Colin Matthews; and Ryan Matthews of Southern Pines, NC.

In addition to her kids and grandkids, Elaine is survived by her 7 siblings: Joanne and her husband Tim Callahan of Portland, CT; Anthony and his wife Charlene Miele of Newington, CT; Susan and her husband Ron Waid of Wilmington, NC; Jacqueline and her husband John Tarascio of Chapel Hill, NC, Stephen and his wife Patricia Miele of Berlin, CT; David and his wife Shannon Miele of Glastonbury, CT; and Sharon and her husband Carl Glowacki of Clearwater, FL. Elaine also had many nieces and nephews who will cherish their special visits and time together.

A private celebration of life will be held on Elaine’s behalf in both Wilmington, NC and in CT. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research, a charity that was very dear to her heart.

I just learned of this. I knew Elaine from our days at Golds Gym here in Torrington. She was such a nice person a fitness enthusiast and would talk of her sons often. I am so sorry

Missing Elaine every day. She was a force to be reckoned with. Her patients loved her and always asked for her when they come back. She truely cared for them and they felt it. Elaine also shared her family with her co workers making them one blended family. She always talked about her boys, grandkids, sibling, nieces and nephews. Thanks to Elaine for inviting down to the beach every year. Great memories were made. Its an honor to have worked with her and to call her my friend. She’s an inspirational person both professionally and personally. I smile every time I think of her.
