Memorial Gifts & Donations

Evelyn Arlene Engel, 93, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, January 11th, in her home.

She was a long-time resident of Leroy, IL and St. Petersburg, FL. She settled in Wilmington, NC in 1972.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Engel, and sons, Eric Bitting and Donald Bitting.

She was born in McLean, IL in 1926, the youngest and last surviving of 7 children to Ella Moore and William Kuehling. Evelyn was raised on the family farm in Leroy, IL where she graduated from high school, married and started a family. As the family grew, they moved to Florida where she was a faithful den mother and member of the Eastern Star. While the children were being raised, they traveled and made lots of memories. Settling in Wilmington in 1972, they continued to travel with their dogs in their Airstream to Balloon Rallies, State Parks and many family and Coast Guard gatherings. If she wasn’t in the garden with her great-grandsons, she was in the kitchen baking cookies with one or all underfoot. You always knew you would be getting a box of cookies for Christmas, even if you weren’t at the house to sneak one off the plate.

She is survived by her loving and faithful Boxer, GiGi, her daughter, Debra Tart (Tony) and sons, Charles Bitting (Melissa) and Thomas Bitting, grandchildren, Kristine Peterson, Jacob Bitting (Christina) and Keith Bitting. She loved and cherished her great-grandchildren more than anything. She will always have a special place in all their hearts- Tyler Peterson (Christina), Blayne Peterson, Hayden Peterson and Evelyn Bitting. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

A service in Illinois will be held at a later date.
