George Julius Jernigan Jr died July 22, 2021 in Wilmington at age 95.
He was the older son of George Sr and Ara Godwin Jernigan of Dunn. He is predeceased by his sister, Nancy E Jernigan, MD and is survived by his brother Jerry O Jernigan, DDS (Deedie) of Wilmington. He leaves two nieces, Teri J Minnis (Raleigh) and Sheila J McElveen (Wilmington) and a nephew, Brian M Jernigan (Christy) of Dunn and a great niece, Susannah McElveen and great nephew, Jake Jernigan.
George graduated from Dunn High School, attended Duke University, served in the US Army and graduated from the NCSU School of Design (Architecture). Professionally, he designed residential, commercial and government buildings. He was associated with the Boney Architectural Firm for the bulk of his career, retiring at age 75.
His insatiable curiosity let him to study computer use from its earliest impact in the CAD/CAM world of architecture, hydroponic gardening, gem cutting with stunning results, family genealogy and cemeteries, even refinishing a baby grand piano which he loved playing as a self-taught pianist.
As a resident of Wrightsville Beach for 50+ years, he was known to generations as 10 o’clock George. It was his habit to “go up the street” at 10 pm to patronize his favorite hangouts like The Wit’s End, The Spot, Palm Room, Kefi’s and others. Even after moving to Wilmington he continued his nightly jaunts.
George always loved fine cars. Early years were convertibles and later “land yacht” Cadillacs. When he gave up driving at age 90, it was sad to see the last of them go, especially the one he dubbed “Yellow Bird”. Drive on George, you will be sorely missed.
The family requests no flowers, but welcomes donations to a charity of choice or to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice. A private burial in Dunn will be held at a later date.
