Elizabeth "Liz" Anderson Barnes Sappenfield

December 7, 1947 - August 26, 2021

Elizabeth Anderson Barnes Sappenfield 73, of Hampstead, NC entered heaven’s gates with thanksgiving on Thursday, August 26, 2021.

Born on December 7, 1947, in Rochester, NY she is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Edward Barnes and Jessie Joey Anderson Barnes.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Gary, her son Gary Barnes Sappenfield (Ruth), daughter Gray S. Moulton, granddaughter Isobella A. Moulton all of Greensboro, NC, brother David A. Barnes (Dianne) of Hampstead, NC, brother Gilbert A. Barnes (Nora) of Henderson, NC, sister-in law Carolyn S. Johnson of Virginia Beach, VA, and several much loved nieces and nephews.

She graduated from UNC-Greensboro, where she obtained a BA in English. Upon graduation, her professional career included teaching, office management, and business partnership in the healthcare industry.

Liz was best known and appreciated for her commitment to service to her community. She attended Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church where she served on the alter guild,
the scholarship committee, founded a women’s Bible Study, taught Sunday School classes, and held Sunday School offices. In 1993 she was inducted into the Philanthropic Educational Organization, P.E.O., an international organization founded in 1869 designed to further educational opportunities for women. She held various offices on both local and state levels. Liz was rightfully proud of her membership in this esteemed organization, and she especially exemplified qualities of faith, truth, and love espoused by it.

Liz’s true person was a genuine gift to all who knew and loved her. She was a friend who truly left footprints on our hearts.

The family wishes to express gratitude to the caring nurses and staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice as well as numerous close friends and neighbors. The kindness and compassion they provided Liz and her family were sincerely appreciated.

Due to Covid, a memorial service will be held on a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested all memorials be made to the P.E.O.’s North Carolina Cottey College Scholarship Fund. (Link is listed below and available)
