Memorial Gifts & Donations

WChaplain Mary ‘Lynn’ Walton Benson was born February 2, 1954 in Wilmington,
North Carolina to William ‘Billy’ James Walton and Lois Enid Sly Walton. Lynn grew
up in Carolina Beach, North Carolina with her three sisters, Vickie Walton Holland,
Dianne Walton Herron and Annette Walton. In September of 1976 she married her
high school sweetheart James ‘Jimmy’ Benson. They had two children, Chaplain
Lyndsay Sly Benson Millard, and James ‘Trae’ Benson. In February of 2018, Lynn
gained what might have been her favorite job, being a Grandmother to Edythe ‘Edy’
Sly Millard.

Lynn was very involved in many things among her community, most notably being a
Chaplain with Warrior Family Ministries and a member of the National Society
Daughters of the American Revolution. Both of these groups represented so much
of what Lynn was about; impacting families with hope with Warrior Family and God
Home and Country with the DAR. She was part of the original Chaplains WFM
Ordained and Commissioned in 2015, she served as the Wilmington Company
Secretary for two years. During her Chaplaincy she was an avid prayer warrior, and
advocate for the organization. She also taught the Life Skills Class to grades K-6 for
Eagle Point Christian Academy, she even had a ‘tea party’ for them at the end of the
year. Speaking of tea parties, Lynn was very active in the DAR, she joined the Stamp
Defiance Chapter December 4, 1999 and was the Chapter Liberian for them
November 2002-May 2004. Then in 2007, Lynn became an Organizing Member of
the Wilmington Ladies Tea Walk Chapter, the Chapter’s Registrar from December
2007-May 2015. She was the Chair for many committees including: Service for
Veterans, Flag of the United States of America, Americanism, Membership,
Constitution Week, National Defense, 13 Member for Members and CAR. She was
also an Organizing Senior Member of the New Hanover Association Society National
Society Children of the American Revolution. She sat on many committees and was
the first to volunteer to help a DAR sister.

Lynn was an amazing supportive wife who stood by her husband and loved him
dearly. She was an incredible mother who taught her children so much and loved
them unconditionally, she was a true sister, and to Edy she was the best
grandmother a little girl could ask for. Lynn is truly one of the most selfless,
gracious women; a true friend who would answer the phone, come to see you and
stop everything to be there for someone. She was loved by everyone who knew her.
Lynn loved her friends and considered them family. She was always smiling and
truly a classy lady.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Your Wife, and Mother was truly a GODLY Women, we Prayed together many times. I always enjoyed talking with her, we were very like minded! She LOVED GOD UNCONDITIONALLY which is why she did so with others. I am Blessed to call her my Friend! I know that Even though we have to say Good-bye for now, I am very Thankful of the Precious Talks we had, during the Day, as well as, late nights through FB. There were many nights I was up at 3:00 & 4:00 AM and Miss Lynn would answer my Inspirational Post, by adding her Spiritual Heartfelt thoughts along with it! I Loved every word of it. She was truly an Inspiration in sooo many ways. Even though we have to say Good-bye for now, I know HEAVEN HAS GAINED THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ANGEL! LYNN you will always be on My HEART & In My Prayers. Until we meet again My Friend, I know you will be watching over all of us! LOVE YOU WITH ALL MY HEART PRECIOUS ANGEL! <3 <3

I am so sorry to hear of Lynn’s passing. We were sisters in the Wilmington Ladies Tea Walk Chapter of DAR. She worked diligently to help me with my genealogy research. Lynn was always willing to help with a smile. I’m blessed to have known her.
