Pamela Jean Kaczala

July 27, 1948 - January 9, 2019

On January 9, 2019, Pamela Jean McPhatter Kaczala, 70, passed away at New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC). From Wilmington, NC, Pam was the daughter of the late Boyce McPhatter and Dorothy Casteen McPhatter.

Pam was employed for 37-1/2 years as a registered nurse at NHRMC. She went on to work as an RN several more years at Silver Stream Health and Rehabilitation Center. Always one to give to others, her retirement years were spent volunteering at Autumn Care of Myrtle Grove, bringing many residents happiness by leading their BINGO games. She also cherished her time with her daughter, having regular lunches, going to movies, and attending the Sounds of Summer Concerts at Wrightsville Beach, NC.

Pam regarded her family as the most important and enjoyable part of life. She is survived by her only child, Kristin (Kristie) Lynn Kaczala Carter, her best friend, “her precious angel.” They went through so much together. She is also survived by her beloved son-in-law, Marvin Clay Carter III, who could always be counted on when a need arose. Grandson Nicholas Austin Carter could do no wrong in his nanny’s eyes; she felt he was one of the smartest kids she knew. Granddaughter Emma Grace Carter was her laughing partner, and Pam could not get over how beautiful and smart she is. Her family was her whole heart.

Pam is also survived by a sister, Barbara (Tony) Williams of Leland, NC, two nieces, Wendy (Tim) Lewis, and Beverly (Cameron) Norris, and three great-nephews. Her son-in-law’s parents, Marvin and Joan Carter, were beloved friends for so many years that they were like immediate family. Lastly, Pam would also want her special friend Jerry mentioned as they loved each other very much and he is among those left behind that will cherish her memory.

Pam’s family sends a special thank you to Dr. Mary K. Rudyk and staff for taking such good care of Pam over the years.

The family will receive friends at Wilmington Funeral and Cremation (1535 S. 41st Street, Wilmington, NC 28403) on January 13th, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Pam’s name can be sent to the family for what she would want most: donations to her grandchildren’s college expenses.
