Shirley Tilton 72, a longtime resident of Michigan who was taken from her family and friends and moved to Wilmington, NC in July 2017, passed away peacefully Thursday, January 9, 2020 at Peak Resources under the care of hospice.
Shirley was a strong woman who always kept a positive attitude all through her lengthy battle with cancer and Parkinson’s disease for 30 years.
Shirley was born April 20, 1947 in Battle Creek MI, the daughter of the late Laban “John” Ellis and Betty Jane (Mullenix) Ellis. She was preceded in death by her biological parents, Frances Ellis (stepmother) and Robert John Ellis (Brother). Shirley graduated from Delton Kellogg High School in 1965. She continued her education at Jackson College and received a Bachelor of Business degree from Central Michigan University. Shirley was a member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Battle Creek, and was employed at Consumers Energy as a Customer Service Supervisor in Battle, Kalamazoo, Jackson and Lansing for over 30 years, retiring in 2002 with a medical disability.
In her free time, Shirley enjoyed golfing, bingo, stock car racing, shopping, making ceramics, quilting, and working on small projects around her house in earlier years. She always kept things neat and tidy. She loved good food and socializing with friends and family. She had a wonderful smile that could light up a room.
Shirley is survived by her former husband, Frank E. Tilton, Jr., Richland, MI, sister Judith Smith, half sister Mary Sue Ellis, Union City, nephews Kenneth (Tracy) Smith,Kalamazoo, MI, Jeffrey (Alicia) Smith, Hastings, MI, Christopher (Melisa) Ellis, Hickory Corners, niece Mindi (Dan) Smith, Delton MI, eight great nieces and nephews and three great great nieces and nephews.
Shirley will be cremated and placed to rest at Reese Cemetery in Battle Creek.
