Claire - so sorry for your loss. I worked with Hugh and Kevin Hoban at Cape Fear CC 1976 - 1978 when I was at UNCW. Some great memories from back then. He was such a unique and wonderful person. May the grace of God be with you and your family in these trying times.

Claire Julie and Jennifer: Your husband and father and I were great friends at Cape Fear CC as assistant golf proffesionals. We had many excursions to the Palm Room and the Silver Dollar at Carolina Beach. He followed me at Minnesott C.C. for a few in the 1980 s. Remember the Minnesott Ferry? I remember trips from Fayetteville to Pennrose Park to enjoy each other's company. A great friend will be missed!!! Take care of each other...

It was a pleasure working with Hugh and carrying on good conversations over the years in the, so called, “Dungeon” (that will always crack me up). Hugh made each individuals day at work more pleasant by observing his calm nature and his upbeat personality. I am blessed to have known him and to have been able to call him my friend.

Working many years with Hugh and having conversations in the, so called, “Dungeon” (will always crack me up) just made each work day more pleasant. Hugh was always upbeat and a very calm matured individual. I was blessed to know him as my friend!

We are so sorry to hear about your loss. Hugh and my brother Chris Herring were great friends and golf buddies. Chris managed the Pro Shop at Buccaneer Country Club for many years and Hugh had a smile and something witty to say every time we would see him. He gave my daughter golf lessons when she was eight years old and he had the patience of Job. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family during this difficult time. Hugh will be missed greatly by many. Betsy Herring Melton

Claire and Family, I am so sorry to hear this news about Hugh. It has been many years since I last saw Hugh but I can honestly say that he was one of my closest and most trusted friends for many years. We started playing golf together when we were six years old and I enjoyed every minute that I spent with him. He was loved by many and respected by all that knew him, and he never missed the opportunity to perform a kind act for someone. He will be missed by all that knew him and it was certainly my honor to have been his friend. I wish all of you peace during this most trying time.

Hugh taught me a lot about golf and helped me on my swing many times we needed which was often. I remember the golf trips we went on and the fun we had. He was a good man. Thanks Hugh don’t hit the 19th hole to hard.

I worked with Hugh at Corning. He would have the whole break room laughing, because he had a great sense of humor. Hugh helped a lot of us with different things. He had a mind full of information and was quicker with numbers than anyone I’ve ever known. He will be missed! My prayers go out to the family. God bless and comfort you through this time of sorrow.......♥️

Sending heartfelt hugs to the family. Hugh was a great person through and through. He always had something funny to say and really knew how to change a person’s bad day into a fun day with his quick wits remarks. Especially when he broke down the remaining work hours down to the minutes which always made me laugh because I would tell him that his break down just makes the work day seem longer. STOP IT HUGH! I would say and we laughed. Ha ha ha He was always a pleasure to pass in the hallways and a hoot to sit with in the breakroom. So, Hugh it was pleasure to have you here and a honor to know you during your 35,501,821 minutes with us. I hope I got the minutes right. You were the king of breaking them down. Fly high my friend and you will always be in our hearts.
