Condolences for Richard Keith Spencer

When I think about Spence, I remember many personal moments with a friend always seemed to be looking forward. Yet, I think he had the enviable ability to enjoy the moment. We met in graduate school, and because I went to school for a while in North Carolina we just seemed to develop a real friendship quickly. Those were fun times. When Spence lived in Rockville, we would head out to “the mountains” to spend time camping and fishing. When I moved to Pennsylvania years later, Thursday night Pizza at his place in Hampstead, Maryland became a regular. Spence was a truly kind soul. He never seemed to find humor at the expense of someone else. I am really glad that his laugh seems so memorable to me. Whether back country camping at Roaring Plains or small “brookie” fishing near Durbin, West Virginia, Spence was always ready for a little adventure. Among the best experiences you can have in life is spending days with a friend enjoying a passion and then sitting around a good campfire at night sharing memories of the past. Time and distance are hard on friendships and I am glad that we continued to talk through the years after he moved to NC. I just wish I could see his RV pulling into my driveway for a visit.
