Condolences for Dr. James A. Maultsby

Jim's obituary wonderfully describes his loving, kind nature. In true Jim form, two weeks before he died, he called me to tell me all the things I should do for my fractured knee even as he was battling his own health problems. That act exemplifies who Jim Maultsby was. Jim was able, however, to be the wonderful person he was because of the compassion and love of Laurel who so understood him and allowed him to flourish and be the incredible man he was.

So fortunate to have played golf with Jim and to have been his "First Mate" a couple of times out on the sound and ocean on the Flying Scot . Always the teacher and just plain fun to be around. What a guy...what a blessing!

My Uncle Jim was the best uncle! He always was kind, helpful and always ready for a good, fun laugh! Growing up, he taught his nieces and nephews to be adventurous and to love nature, and especially water sports! I think he taught me to ski at Smith Mountain Lake. In any case, he was always there when we needed him. I miss him and wish I could call on him like I used to. I guess I will call on him any way...If I miss I can just imagine how his wife, Laurel and all of kids, my cousins, must be missing him. I know my Mom, his sister, Ruth is.

Dear Laurel, Stewart and I are so sorry for your loss and we send our deepest sympathy to you and your family. Jim was such a wonderful character and we always enjoyed our conversations at Steve and Stephanie's. We will remember Jim as a warm, compassionate man who had a full life with many interests. He touched so many hearts and he will be greatly missed.

Oh My Dear Laurel, I am so sad; Jim was my inspiration for so much. The last time I saw him ( couple months ago) we laughed together and said that we would go skiing together and be ok to go on the bunny slope!! I wish so much we did that. He was the best most cheerie man that had a million projects always going on - he was a free spirit and so good looking too. I loved talking to him. I know he is having fun resting now and keeping all the angels busy doing projects! I am hugging you Laurel in my heart and will celebrate his incredible life when we can. Xoxoxo Love Caroline

Jim was a very special friend and always supportive. I will always remember our many sailing adventures and games of golf trying to improve our scores. You will be missed but always remembered,

I met Dr. Maultsby when he consulted on one of our mutual patients at St. Marys Health Center. He was very helpful and available to our patients in need. We soon discovered that we shared a love of sailing and I was fortunate to enjoy many days venturing with him in his Flying Scot sloop. We had a great time sailing and talking together during those trips. He was a wonderful man and I am so glad to have known him.

Dr. Maultsby was instrumental in helping me open the St. Mary Health Center for the poor & uninsured in downtown Wilmington. He's desire to help was admirable, if we called him to see patients he never said no, he always made himself available. He did it with kindness and love. I don't know how to ever replace you my dear friend. My most sincere condolences to the entire family. Rest in peace Doc.
