I didn’t know Bro Merritt as some did but I can say that what I knew of him was a Godly man who loved his family and the church . He sure could make an awesome pound cake too!! My prayers are with the family and friends . He will truly be missed .

Marie, Cynthia, Kieth and Tim, Most precious memories of a time long past, but not forgotten. I am so blessed to have the opportunity to know each of you, and to have been mentored at such a young age by Pitt. He gave a young boy of 12 his first job at Merritt's Grocery and kindled a friendship and respect between us that lasts today. I learned so much from Pitt; from his sharp and quick humor, to his deep sense of faith and family. When Marie would bring the kids to the grocery store it was a time of smiles and laughter. I will continue to remember those fun times, to remember Pitt and treasure well the lessons he taught me about family, life and people. God's blessings and peace to each of you. Ray Spencer

We will surely miss paw paw being at church and family gatherings. He never failed to make sure Michael and Ollen got their favorite piece of pound cake. I will always remember the story he would tell when he went to the grocery store and asked the young man working in that area “if those were hen eggs or rooster eggs?” he said the young man replied “I’m not sure I will go find out” he said he chuckled and told him not to worry about it.

I will always remember this fine man since my childhood when we would visit the church behind Cobles' Funeral Home and then later the Pentecostals of Wilmington Church. What a kind and loving man he was. He and his wife always made us feel so welcome. Thank God for his life.

It was an honor holding the church door open for him after Sunday service sometimes. He always thanked me with a smile.
